New Dangerous Goods Training for Airlines of the LH Group

27. Feb 2023

New Dangerous Goods Training for Airlines of the LH Group

  • Versatile use for flight crews and ground staff
  • Two premieres in one project
  • Paralympic gold medalists as extras

In air travel, inconspicuous objects such as batteries, e-cigarettes, and matches are also classified as dangerous goods. Aviation employees have always been trained to recognize so-called dangerous goods. The introduction of new requirements for training concepts on the part of the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA, German Federal Aviation Office) lead to a group-wide project and two premieres. Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT) implemented competence-based training for all Lufthansa Group airlines for the first time. Likewise for the first time, LAT developed a training course not only for flight crews, but also for teams on the ground.

In addition to employees of the Lufthansa, Brussels, and Austrian airlines, various departments of Lufthansa Aviation Training also collaborated on this international project led by Doris Berweiler, Manager Training LAT DE. Beyond that, real Olympians who had won gold at the Paralympics were involved for a number of short instructional films. This is because wheelchairs, in particular, contain dangerous goods, such as large batteries.

“From January 1, 2023, onwards, the dangerous goods training has to be competence-based, according to the German Federal Aviation Office,” explains Raghoonundun Gunputh, Senior Manager Safety Training LAT GmbH, “and because of the successful collaborative efforts among Lufthansa Group, LAT was granted approval for all LAT companies on December 27, 2022. The Federal Aviation Office explicitly praised the quality of the realization, as we implemented all desired requirements.”

The new version of the dangerous goods training has been designed as an interactive training. Participants no longer have to just click through the training but have to actively participate and will receive feedback. Participants work their way through the training level by level. And if the first attempt turns out not to be successful, a virtual assistant is ready to help.

LAT has designed a separate training course for each occupational group. This has resulted, among other things, in films on the same scenario but from diverse perspectives and with different approaches to solving the problem. If, for example, a suitcase gives off an unpleasant odor, the cockpit team and the ramp agents are faced with the same dangerous goods problem, but they have to act differently.
“The new dangerous goods training was designed for Lufthansa Group and is already being used by various Group airlines,” states Raghoonundun Gunputh, Senior Manager Safety Training LAT GmbH, before adding: “But we have also developed a version for the external market. We have already established first contact with interested parties.”
