LUFTHANSA AVIATION TRAINING EXTENDS TRAINING FLEET IN ROSTOCK-LAAGE
- EFA-fleet receives two additional Diamond DA-42 training aircraft

Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT) invests in a further expansion of pilot schools under the European Flight Academy brand. Since this week, two additional Diamond DA-42-VI aircraft complement the flight training fleet at Rostock-Laage. In April 2018, five new efficient and highly modern aircraft were added to the fleet and replaced ten-year-old Piper PA-44 aircraft.
Within the scope of an investment package, Lufthansa Aviation Training targets the modernization of his training fleet as well as the extension of locations like European Flight Academy’s pilot school at Rostock-Laage airport.
A team of experts transferred the two new DA-42-VI training aircraft of the Austrian manufacturer “Diamond Aircraft Industries” from Wiener Neustadt to Rostock-Laage after the so-called “Acceptance”. Thus, the training fleet locally grows to seven aircraft. In total, the EFA-student pilots at the locations Bremen, Rostock-Lage, Grenchen (Switzerland) and in Goodyear (Arizona) train on board of 57 LAT-owned training aircraft. Additionally, at the partner pilot school Flight Safety Academy in Vero Beach (Florida), a pool of 50 training aircraft is at the student pilots’ disposal.
Both new aircraft are painted in the liveries of Lufthansa or SWISS. The flight route from Austria to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania included a low-level flight at Frankfurt Airport, which in fact is Lufthansa’s largest hub.
The DA-42’s are best equipped for instrument rating training on multi-engine aircraft. They have a weather-radar and an iPad-interface as well as a de-icing system onboard that allows training flights in known moderate icing conditions. In addition, thanks to the two168 horsepower diesel-engine each, the aircraft is much quieter than the predecessor model and consumes around one-third less fuel while performing a 50 percent higher rate of climb in case of a simulated engine failure.
Matthias Lehman, Managing Director of Lufthansa Aviation Training Pilot Academy, which also includes the Rostock-Laage training site, is highly pleased about the new additions to the training fleet: “It is very important to us to prepare our cadets as good as possible for the challenges within the pilot profession. For that matter, the training on modern training aircraft plays an important role. Also, the extension of Rostock-Laage’s fleet is a commitment to the location, where, due to a well-developed infrastructure and high density of surrounding airfields with several approach procedures, ideal training conditions exist.”
