Ready for training: LAT puts second cockpit for helicopter simulator into operation

LBA approval of the Airbus H135 in Frankfurt successfully completed.

Lufthansa Aviation Training’s helicopter full flight simulator in Frankfurt has recently received a second cockpit and can now be operated in different configurations. In August 2020, the Airbus H145 simulator joined the existing training fleet at LAT's Frankfurt location. From now on, the device is also available in the Airbus H135 configuration. The LAT project team and the manufacturer Reiser had tested the H135 simulator intensively and prepared it for certification since the beginning of May. Last week, the H135 successfully passed approval by the Federal Aviation Office (LBA).

Cockpit change in eight to ten hours

One simulator, two cockpits: the roll-on / roll-off system enables LAT to change cockpits in around eight to ten hours. In the future, the device will be available in a fixed cycle in the respective configurations.

“The LBA approval of the H135 FFS is another important step to further expand LAT's position in what is for us a new market segment of the helicopter training market. I am pleased that we can now serve an additional target group and thank everyone involved who made the implementation possible despite the difficult pandemic conditions ”- Matthias Spohr, Managing Director of LAT.

Further features planned

Further additions to the device are already being planned. LAT is currently working on various software updates to model certain realistic scenarios, such as approaches to specific clinics or cities. A third crew member station with virtual reality technology has been supplementing the simulator since the beginning of 2021, and a virtual helicopter hoist operation will follow shortly.

The most modern simulator of its kind

The training device is the most modern level D helicopter simulator worldwide, which has been manufactured by the manufacturer Reiser Simulation and Training. Thanks to the high resolution of the visuals and the additional option of depicting flight procedures at night with night vision equipment, the FFS is ideal for training operators in the HEMS area (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services).
