Initial certification of our energy management system according to ISO 50001: Efficiency – Responsibility – Future"

Lufthansa Aviation Training is committed to sustainability – with a systematic approach and foresight

Your training provider is becoming more energy-efficient – here’s how we’re taking off:

By deciding to implement an energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001, we demonstrate our commitment to reducing energy costs, lowering emissions, and embedding sustainable business practices for the long term. The international ISO 50001 standard supports organizations in establishing a systematic approach to managing energy performance. This creates the foundation for measurable improvements – from energy consumption to contributions to climate protection.

A clear framework – planned, executed, and reviewed

With the introduction of an Energy Management System in accordance with ISO 50001, we are drawing on the proven high-level structure familiar from ISO management systems. The PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act) ensures continuous improvement: we define energy targets, measure energy flows, conduct internal audits of the system, and actively enhance processes.

More Than Just a Certificate – The Benefits at a Glance

  • Strategic Energy Policy: Responsibility from leadership to every employee – with clear communication and focus on objectives.
  • Efficient Energy Planning: Energy assessment, baseline data, key performance indicators, and targeted measures – with measurability as the priority.
  • Transparent Monitoring: From internal audits to management reviews – we keep performance in sight.
  • Sustainable Impact: Reduction of CO₂ emissions, lowering of operating costs, and securing the future for the benefit of our customers, partners, and the environment.

The Path to Initial ISO 50001 Certification

  1. Project Launch – Formation of an energy team, alignment of the energy policy and energy objectives, and establishment of the organizational structure.

  2. Implementation – Collection and analysis of key energy data and costs. Implementation of processes and documentation in accordance with ISO requirements.

  3. Audit & Certification – Initial audit by independent auditors, successfully concluding with the ISO 50001 certificate.

  4. Ongoing Optimization – Regular audits, evidence of effectiveness, and a continuous improvement process ensure long-term standards and sustainable action for all parties involved.

A First Conclusion

The introduction of the energy management system supports not only our cost objectives but also our ESG strategy – specifically the goal of systematically reducing energy consumption and emissions. At the same time, the system meets requirements from the European Green Deal and the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) – strengthening our position in relation to regulatory compliance and funding opportunities.

Energy efficiency is no longer an abstract goal but something tangible – in numbers, in measures, and in day-to-day operations. Employees from a wide range of departments are identifying their own opportunities for savings and actively contributing ideas. As a result, energy efficiency is no longer solely the responsibility of energy management or the sustainability department, but has become a shared responsibility.

For our customers, this means:

You are training with a partner who not only continually invests in technology – for example, through upgraded simulator visual systems – but also in sustainable energy structures. Together, we open the door to modern training standards – efficient, responsible, and future-oriented.
If you have any questions about the standard, our certification process, or energy-related topics, I will be happy to assist you!
