LUFTHANSA AVIATION TRAINING OPENS VIRTUAL REALITY HUBS FOR CABIN TRAINING

  • Innovative VR Training for flight attendants starts in Frankfurt and Munich
  • LAT becomes Europe's leading provider of virtual reality in cabin crew training

Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT) now offers an innovative Virtual Reality Training for flight attendants in Frankfurt and Munich. In modern VR hubs, these flight attendants will in future undergo safety relevant trainings as part of their recurrent training in a virtual way.

The launch of the Virtual Reality Training in Frankfurt and Munich is an important milestone for the training provider Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT): In a very short time, the company has implemented a state-of-the-art virtual training course for flight attendants together with the customer Lufthansa and the company NMY GmbH. In concrete terms, each year around 18,500 Lufthansa flight attendants will now be able to practice some of their safety-related training required by the authorities virtually. LAT also plans the expansion of the VR training in other areas of cabin crew training in the future. Ola Hansson, Managing Director at LAT: "We are very proud that we can now officially start with the virtual training for Lufthansa flight attendants and offer them the most modern VR training center for the aviation sector in Europe. Digitalization is one of LAT’s focus topics and with the new VR hubs we have a great example of how consistently and at the pulse of time we are pushing these topics forward."

From the training center directly into the aircraft

For the training itself, VR glasses are handed out to the participants – then they are taken to one of the 18 new VR cabins (each approx. 3.00 x 3.00 meters in size) at LAT’s training locations in Frankfurt and Munich. As soon as the trainees put on their VR glasses, they are immediately in a virtual plane and receive a short introduction from the digital assistant "VIA" (short for "Virtual Interactive Assistant"). During the entire exercise, a panel operator in the VR hub has a constant view of the action via several monitors: They transmit live videos from each cabin as well as what the participants are seeing through their VR glasses. Trainee and operator can also contact each other directly at any time - whether for questions or assistance. A major advantage of the new virtual training is that several flight attendants can now practice at the same time. Compared to training on a real aircraft or a cabin simulator, VR training is also the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
